Fish catching with Poulo (a basket of wickerwork for catching fish), a nearly lost traditional festival held on the Padma River at Lalpur in Natore.The festival held on Sunday (Feb 18) at Damus Char of Bilmaria in Lalpur.

Hundreds of fishermen from different parts of Lalpur participated in the fiesta, professional as well as seasonal fish hunters had been spotted. Various kind of fish was caught on their Poulo. The crowd of curious people to enjoy the Poulo fishing was eye-catching.

Mominul Haque a participant from Chandpur said, “This festival took place every year at the end of the winter. The amount of fish was insufficient this year due to the heavy cold. But the joy of catching fish is more pleasurable than eating. That’s the reason behind taking part in this festival.”

“When the water decreased to feet level we catch fish with Poulo. People from neighboring villages also join us. Five of us have come, every year we come to the Padma for fishing. It is very enjoyable”, said Salahuddin Ahmed a local fisherman of Bilmaria.

Aslam Sheikh Hunter from Hazir Hat said, “The perfect time for fishing is the first week of February to the end of March after the water comes down to the waist level we march to catch fish.
