The 'Freedom from Independence' sculpture square, a symbol commemorating the liberation war's valorous struggle, is in a state of decay due to years of neglect. Local freedom fighters and residents are demanding immediate restoration of this historical monument that vividly portrays the Bengali people's heroic struggle.

Over time, the 'Freedom from Independence' sculpture has suffered from neglect, showing signs of discoloration, cracks, and extensive damage. Unfortunately, authorities have ignored its deteriorating state, failing to give it the respect it deserves. Concerned individuals are urging urgent maintenance and renovation efforts, including fencing the area to protect it from further harm.

Rafiqul Alam Tuku, a former deputy commander of the Kushtia District Freedom Fighters Sangsad, expressed dismay at the monument's present condition. He lamented the unclean and unwelcoming environment surrounding this historically significant site. The lack of proper maintenance has led to garbage accumulation and makeshift shops in the vicinity, tarnishing its sanctity. Tuku urged authorities to either restore the sculpture or relocate it to a place where it can be duly respected.

The 'Swadhikar to Freedom' sculpture, erected in 1972 in front of the Kushtia Municipal Market and alongside NS Road, is also suffering from negligence. The meticulously crafted wall depicts various liberation war movements with exquisite detail, but the limestone and plaster have deteriorated significantly due to a lack of maintenance. The absence of a protective fence has led to haphazard parking and the establishment of temporary stalls, further damaging the site.

Executive Engineer Rabiul Islam of the municipality acknowledged the deteriorating state of the 'Freedom from Independence' sculpture and mentioned plans to construct a super soap in its current location, explaining the delay in renovation. A sculpture resembling the upcoming super soap will replace the deteriorated monument.

In 1972, under the initiative of MM Reza, the administrator of Kushtia municipality, and with the support of a civic committee, the 'Swadhikar to Freedom' square and its accompanying sculpture were built. The sculpture was a collaborative creation by artists Shahid and Lutfar Rahman.

The 'Swadhikar to Freedom' square's origin can be traced back to the tumultuous events of 1971 when Pakistani forces caused extensive damage to the municipal market and Sirajuddaula road. Administrator M.M. Reza, along with the civic committee, undertook the project to preserve the history of independence for future generations through the 'Swadhikar to Freedom' sculpture, which beautifully encapsulates various movements and struggles from that historic period.
