The United States is deeply concerned about Chinese military drills near Taiwan and is closely monitoring the situation while coordinating with its partners, the US State Department said in a statement on Saturday (25 May).
"The United States is deeply concerned over the People's Liberation Army joint military drills in the Taiwan Strait and around Taiwan. We are monitoring PRC People's Republic of China activities closely and coordinating with allies and partners regarding our shared concerns," the department said in a statement.
The United States urges Beijing to act with restraint and not to use "democratic transition" on the island as an excuse for military provocations, the statement read.
"The United States remains committed to its longstanding one China policy, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the Three Joint Communiques, and the Six Assurances," the statement added.
