US artificial intelligence firm OpenAI has opened its first Asia office in Tokyo as the use of the ChatGPT artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot grows, the company said.

"As we grow our operations internationally, we’re expanding into Asia with a new office in Tokyo, Japan," the company said in its press release on Sunday (15 April).

OpenAI said that it had started offering a chatbot model that was specifically designed for the Japanese market. Compared to the current model, this one can translate and summarize Japanese text more quickly.

The Japan office is the third foreign office for the US-based company alongside the United Kingdom and Ireland, the firm added.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated his intention to open an office in Japan during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo in April 2023 because Japan is one of the company's major markets, with more than 2 million users.

OpenAI took the AI market by storm in November 2022 when it presented a generative tool called ChatGPT. In Japan, it will compete with companies such as SoftBank and Nippon Telegraph & Telephone, which are racing to develop AI-based services for Japanese speakers.
