South Korean electronics manufacturer Samsung has become the global leader in smartphone supplies in the first quarter of 2024, stealing the lead from US tech giant Apple, the IDC market intelligence company said on Monday (15 April).

"While Apple managed to capture the top spot at the end of 2023, Samsung successfully reasserted itself as the leading smartphone provider in the first quarter," IDC's program vice president for the mobile device tracker department, Ryan Reith, was quoted as saying in a statement.

In the first quarter of this year, Samsung Electronics supplied over 60 million smartphones to the global market, accounting for 20.8% of smartphone shipments worldwide, while Apple supplied 50.1 million smartphones, which is only 17.3% of global shipments, IDC said in its Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi ranks third with a 14.1% share in the global smartphone supplies, followed by another two Chinese manufacturers, Transsion Holdings and OPPO, with 9.9% and 8.7%, respectively, IDC added.

At the same time, total global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2024 grew by 7.8% year-on-year to 289.4 million devices, IDC data show.
